What is  Zonta International?

Zonta is a global organization of business and professional people, mainly women. There are over 33,000 members in 1,254 clubs throughout 67 countries. It was established in Buffalo, USA in 1919 & since then, thousands of women around the world have volunteered their time, talents & energy to local & international service projects that are designed to advance the status of women.
Zonta is an accredited non-government organization with consultative status at the United Nations & the International Labour Organisation.

What does Zonta do?

•  It serves the community at a global & local level
•  It works on a number of fronts to improve the status of all women
•  It works on an international level to promote justice & universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Zonta is represented at the United Nations in regards women‟s affairs
•  Groups meet in a local area monthly to work towards the Zonta goals and to cultivate friendships amongst members
• What projects does the Zonta Club of Mangawhai support?
•  We are supporting Homebuilders (KDC‟s social agency) & the Whangarei Domestic Violence Unit with a number of projects geared to improving the status of women
•  We support the Homebuilders agency by supplying gift packs for new babies in “at risk” situations and leading cooking/homecraft lessons with young mums
•  We are supporting the NZ Endometriosis education programme “all about me” which is being implemented in our local high schools during 2009
•  We promote the Zonta Awards programme to young women showing leadership skills in our community through the international Young Women in Public Affairs and Jane Klausman Women in Business Awards
•  We support Plunket and Cancer Support at the White House in Mangawhai
•  We promote „White Ribbon Day‟ which is an International day with a focus on the Elimination of Violence Against Women
•  Internationally, we support specific projects for women in a number of countries such as Afghanistan & Namibia
