Mangawhai Businessman
New Chairman of the
Kaipara Development Agency
- Kaipara Lifestyler, August/September Issue
 Marshall Taylor |
Richard Drake, Chairman of the Kaipara District Economic Development Trust (which operates as the Kaipara Development Agency) since it was established in August 2001, did not seek re-election to the position at the Trust meeting this month, and Marshall Taylor of Mangawhai has been unanimously elected as the new Chairman for the coming year.
Richard Drake said he has enjoyed the challenge of leading the formation and initial growth of the new development agency. It is now a good time to hand over the leadership to a new Chairman to take the District further forward. Mr Drake will continue his term as a Trustee on the Kaipara Development Agency.
Following its establishment in August 2001, the agency agreed on, and confirmed a strategy for development after wide consultation with the public of the Kaipara District.
Jason Smith was engaged as the KDA's first employee and was supported by Trustees in implementing the priorities from the strategy.
Flowing from the strategy, the KDA has developed a new brand for the district and has seen it widely promoted and recognised. It has taken over management of the Kauri Coast I-Site information centre and restructured it to operate within approved budgets.
The KDA has supported individual communities within the District in promoting themselves and has facilitated the delivery of support for Kaipara businesses within the District.
Major projects have included the topo climate study that identifies opportunities for growing alternative crops in the District, and development of the Kumara industry cluster that has helped grow the Kaipara Kumara industry into a significant exporter of high value food products. This has been followed by the Kai in Kaipara project promoting locally produced foods across the whole district.
The KDA has maintained a strong working relationship with Enterprise Northland, the regional development agency, and with the central government agency, NZ Trade and Enterprise.
Those relationships have helped attract funding from outside the Kaipara District to support development projects for the area.
Mr Drake said the present economy of the Kaipara District is strong and there are good opportunities for continued growth.
Marshall Taylor, a resident of Mangawhai, brings to the chairmanship a strong commercial and community background including business governance and strategic planning.
His recent, and or current involvement in the Northland region includes, director of NZ Heart Foundation and several privately owned companies; direcor of Advance Whangarei and Trustee of Whangarei Tourism Trust; acting chairman of Focus Mangawhai; trustee of the Kaipara Economic Development Trust and Northland mentor for Business In The Community.
His working career has been in large NZ or International companies at sales, marketing, operational or Chief Executive level. Until 1993 he was Managing Director of what is now Frucor Beverages Ltd.
He has been actively involved in community and business affairs in Mangawhai and has a strong appreciation of the values of the whole Kaipara District and a commitment to its future.
