mhvls logo jan

Easter officially marks the end to the patrol season, Surf Life Saving New Zealand is urging Kiwis to be cautious when swimming at an unpatrolled beach.
We're constantly working towards lowering New Zealand's drowning rate and with patrols now coming to an end, we ask that people take responsibility for their own safety when around the water.
When swimming at an unpatrolled beach, we encourage  beach-goers to adhere to a few simple rules. Be prepared, watch out for yourself and others, be aware of the dangers and know your limits.
- Always keep an eye on children in the water
- Get a friend to swim with you- never swim or surf alone
- Watch out for that rip… rips are calm patches of water that can sometimes have waves breaking to the side. Rippled, discoloured or foamy water with debris can also mean there is a rip present.
Volunteer weekend patrols begin again at Labour Weekend in October.

IronwomanIronwoman from Mangawhai Osteopathy

Soon to be Ironwoman from Mangawhai Osteopathy - ironwoman
Ironman. One of  those words that is regarded with majestic awe.
A battering but epic 4km swim, followed by a long haul on the bike, 160km in fact. Eat, drink, pedal. Repeat.  Next up: it's only a marathon, what’s another 42km of gruelling, mind blowing, intense discipline, your mind takes on a life of its own, but due to determination and a fantastic support team I made it!!  13 hours, 26 min.  I had a brilliant day, have forgotten about all the pain already and I’m keen to do another. It is the most exhilarating thing I have ever done thus far and it’s going to take me a while to come down from my high.
A huge thanks to all my patients and colleagues who listened intently to every lesson I  learnt.  It's definitely made me more compassionate as a practitioner.

At The Smashed Pipi Café & Bar we endeavour to offer you the best experience in the region. Most of our cooked food is prepared in our genuine wood-fired oven. All Smashed Pipi thin base pizzas are hand-crafted using our own freshly prepared dough, sauces and toppings. The bistro menu offers a great selection of appetisers, quick snacks, and hearty winter soups, to meaty ribs, great steaks, fresh mussels, & sea foods, pasta dishes, wood-fired gourmet pizza and "wicked" desserts, plus a good choice of vegetarian.

riparianRiparian Planting Group

Get involved with planting and help keep the harbour clean.
The Riparian Planting Group is currently working on the Tara Rd/Moir St corner by the bridge. Twelve-hundred plants were put in last season, so volunteers at a recent weeding session were really pleased to see how well they were establishing. Next stage is more planting towards Tara Road with some waterway edge clearing assistance from the local Council as blackberry and kikuyu needs to be cleared first. Native plants suitable for the site have been sourced, but of course funding is an ongoing challenge. Volunteers are now a formal incorporated society, which helps when making grant applications, and they get together for working bees and a meeting every couple of months. The more helpers the better – riparian planting is a long term project, so start young! If you can help in any way with admin, supplying plants, weeding, planting or whatever, contact Jane 431 5828 or Alex 021 029 56791.
