Saturday 15th August
10am till noon
The Northland Regional Council, Kaipara District Council and the community are working together on a restoration plan for the Mangawhai Heads sand dunes, which are suffering serious deterioration due to the impact of people and the invasion of weeds. The project aims to replant the back dune and re-establish vegetation of the fore dune within a staged 3 year programme.
Laura Shaft, CoastCare co-ordinator for NRC has provided the plan, in consultation with Dr David Bergin of the Dunes Trust, and is funding plants and materials. Adrian Birkbeck of KDC is providing support and funding for weed control, and I am providing the link into the community.
Stage 1, during the current winter and spring, will focus on the section immediately north of the Surf Club along to opposite the toilets and wi ll involve taping walkway boundaries and the foot of the dune to keep folk off the restoration area, and planting of spinifex and pingao on open sand, wiwi and flax in the back dune, preceded by weed control.
A community planting day is planned for Saturday 15th August from 10am until noon. I am seeking support from as many community groups as I can so please put this in your diary if you can possibly help. The day will go ahead wet or fine (plants love water!). If you think you can make it a quick reply to firstname.lastname@example.org, without any commitment, would give me an indication of numbers I can expect.

Gavan Riley Jewellery
Gavan's jewellery captures the intricacies and beauty of nature. He combines the skills of carving and jewellery making to render unique pieces of jewellery. Each piece of jewellery is hand carved using the tradition of lost-wax and then cast in silver or gold.
Gavan honed his skills while working with his whanau at The Great Frog rock n roll jewellery shop in London designing jewellery for heavy metal bands, movies and television shows.
It wasn't until he returned to New Zealand where he found the ability to express his real talent, which had arisen from the (re) connection with the land and observations of the surrounding environment, which resulted in his portrayals of indigenous flora and fauna.
We at Pipi Gallery are very fortunate to have now on display some of Gavan's special one off pieces along with a wide selection of his rings, bracelets, brooches, earrings and pendants.
Prices and sizes availabe on request. We post and package within New Zealand and overseas, or contact us for a Smashed Pipi Gallery gift voucher

MAZ - Mangawhai Activity Zone
The Casino Royale night was an outstanding success! Almost $42,000 was raised on the night. Funds are to be spent on a BBQ area in the park close to the carpark and children’s playground area, and the goal is to have BBQ’s installed and operating by Christmas.
A huge THANK YOU to all those who organised the night, to everyone who gave of their time voluntarily on the night to make it happen, to sponsors for donating amazing auction items and to the local community for turning up and supporting this wonderful cause.
To the five families who made this happen MAZ and Mangawhai thank you very much. To:
Honor & Craig Stratton-Parker
Dayna & Bryce Beauchamp
Pit & Kevin Stirrat
Jo & Ricardo Lee
Natasha & John Lee
A very special big thank you to Vanessa Kerridge of Flaxmere House, Vanessa and her team generously volunteered their time to make the night amazing.
MyPad Auction – Mangawhai Heads
In the next few days MAZ hopes to begin construction of a “MyPad” in Mangawhai. This is a project undertaken for MAZ by Colin and Jenny Gallagher to raise funds for our park.
The house will be located on the corner of Devon and Moir Point Road.
MyPad is not just a well designed bach, it’s “future proofed” so that it can transform from a bach into a permanent home. MyPad is eco friendly, healthy and energy efficient.
The MyPad to be built for MAZ will have three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a covered outdoor area and boat shed all on a 940 m2 site. It will have a 7 HomeStar rating and a Lifemark certification.
Funds raised through this project will be used at MAZ to build an extensive wooden fort in the children’s playground area, a warm up / cool down exercise area at the entrance to the walking tracks, and commencement of stage III of the skate park “free flow” bowl.
There will be open home days during January 2015 when the house is complete. The auction date is yet to be announced.
Go over to MyPad.net.nz to check out designs.
Become an official SMAZ
The call is out from Mangawhai Activity Zone, that wonderful park on Molesworth Drive. Noticed how many people were using all the facilities over the school holidays? Just brilliant. MAZ trustees wish now to build a team of community minded volunteers to help maintain and develop our Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ). If you could give one hour, or even one day per month, they would love to hear from you. Call Colin for details 021 955 850 or 09 431 4598. If you love Mangawhai, do something like joining SMAZ – Supporters of MAZ. Come along to meet the committee this Sunday, 26 July, 11am, at the MAZ carpark, to get an idea of the sort of volunteer work required – mowing, weeding, lost property, signage, maintenance, safety aspects and suchlike.

Mangawhais got Talent!
Robby Turnbull continues to star as he plays in the States. This time he's finished runner-up in the World Stars of Junior Golf 2015, in the 7-8 year old division. Robby's a great talent, nurtured here at Mangawhai by Terry Young and very definitely a name we'll hear a lot more of in future years. Robby's placing this time saw him come out ahead of the recent winner of the World title. A brilliant result, congratulations to Robby and his team - and a very proud Terry.
Peter Adkins Memorial
Thanks to Peter, Cherie and all the Adkins family for their generous sponsorship of this day - one of our most popular annual events. 28 family members played, plus nearly 100 members, all enjoying a competitive day.

Palmers Garden Ramble
The date is set for Sat 14th & Sun 15th, November.
Mark it on your calendar now!
Planning for the 2015 Palmers Planet Mangawhai Garden Ramble is underway, some of our most popular gardens from previous years have agreed to be on show again and our team are working hard to find something new too. We are also very lucky to announce the continued sponsorship from Palmers Planet! A big thanks to the Palmers Planet team for their support.
There's something old, something new, there's big and bold and beautiful too. We wish all our gardeners a forgiving winter as they muck in and prepare to put their piece of paradise on show. We couldn't do it without your support! There is always room for more though so anyone keen to be involved this year, there is still time.
We are able to confirm our 20th garden to be included in our 2015 line up.

NZ National Vegetable
LeaderBrand, one of the country’s largest producers of fresh vegetables, has been lobbying for beetroot to be declared the national vegetable of New Zealand.
However, a new challenger has thrown their hat into the ring. Kaipara Kumara, based in Ruawai, is arguing that kumara should have the title. Both LeaderBrand and Kaipara Kumara have set up online petitions via change.org where New Zealanders can get behind their chosen vegetable by leaving their signature.
The battle of beetroot versus kumara will come to a head at The Food Show in Auckland from July 30-Aug 2 where both LeaderBrand and Kaipara Kumara will be collecting signatures.
Show your support by using the hashtag #VoteBeetroot or #VoteKumara on Twitter and Instagram. Updates on the petition will be posted on a dedicated Kumara vs. Beetroot Facebook page. LeaderBrand and Kaipara Kumara will also be running a joint recipe competition through the Facebook page to help promote the campaign. The beetroot petition can be found at bit.ly/voteforbeetroot and the kumara petition can be found at bit.ly/voteforkumara.
