Heads FM- The Wireless is now “on air” on 90.4FM
It may have been the holiday season over the past few months for a lot of people, but Mangawhai radio station owner, Mark Perry, has been busy getting new equipment installed and configured for his new station, The Wireless.
The new station, sister station to Heads 106.4FM, has been on air locally in Mangawhai on low power of only 1 watt since May 2014. In November, when the Government auctioned off nationwide frequencies, Mark was the successful bidder in obtaining a 100 watt commercial licence for 90.4FM.
Now, with test transmissions completed, the “switch has been flicked”.
The Wireless is now on 90.4FM on the dial, giving coverage from Marsden Cove in Bream Bay to Pakiri, including Wellsford and Mangawhai, with a programme of timeless, classic nostalgia music, regular ZB news and sport and local community information. “Anybody over 50 will remember the days when the radio in the house was referred to as ‘the wireless’, so I’m trying to recapture the sound and familiarity of that time, particularly in this day and age where everything seems to be aimed at the young!” quips Perry.
Mark is also planning to have Sunday Night Serials as a special feature in the near future.
The Wireless 90.4FM will also be a part of the Emergency Response Plan working with local and regional councils. Civil Defence or severe weather warnings will be broadcast now on both stations for residents of the Bream Bay and Mangawhai coastal and hinterland regions.
Mark Perry welcomes advertising enquiries and community information by email to email@example.com.
The Wireless can also be heard anywhere by streaming on digital devices via the station’s Facebook page and tunein.com, simply by searching for “The Wireless”.
Contact Mark Perry for further information, via firstname.lastname@example.org or phone: 0274 983 486.

25 years Celebration of the Wood Street Shops
Friday 6th March 2015 5pm onwards
Reserve your table and join the original team for a nostalgic evening
Twenty-five years ago a couple of friends opened the first restaurant in Mangawhai. Norah Butler, Cynthia Linnell-Wright and Gael McConachy decided to give it a go. Although it was only a couple of months before Christmas they all worked to get it open before Christmas.
We managed one practise night with friends and family. Opening night we were fully booked and an hour into the evening, to my horror, one of the ovens stopped working. I remember standing in the middle of the kitchen looking out into the crowded restaurant, at the lines of orders and panicking.
The original restaurant has moved a few times. It expanded into the drapery shop after we sold it in February 1992. After a few owners it was renamed Sail Rock, and when the shops across the road were built it was moved to its present position. Marg, the present owner, has decided to celebrate the 25 years by having an evening on Friday March 6. She has chosen some old favourites from our original recipes for the menu. We hope anyone interested in joining us to celebrate the restaurant’s first years (By Gael McConachy)

Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society’s (MHRS)
The next phase of mangrove removal under the Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society’s (MHRS) 2013 Resource Consent begins in March with the planned removal of up to 15 hectares from the inner harbour.
The areas targeted for removal this year by the Society are:
* Insley St causeway, where approximately 1.7 hectares of mangroves are located.
* Black Swamp Road, 0.85 hectares of mangroves.
* “Mangrove Island” the sand island in the central harbour where approximately 12 hectares are located.
The contract to remove more than 150 tonnes of mangroves from these areas has been awarded to Dave Smith, a local contractor. Dave was responsible for the initial mangrove removal contract at the Lincoln St reserve in March 2014 and is well known in Mangawhai under his business name Dave Smith Logging.

Soon to be Ironwoman from Mangawhai Osteopathy
What I learnt this week? I hope it’s not always the case, but when you do something that you don’t necessarily feel like doing, often there is something lovely as a reward. This week’s Mangawhai Estuary swim against the Hide Tide current. Stunning. Challenging. Reminds me that the sea is in charge. That pine tree on my left on the way back after an hour of swimming was haunting me but I just needed to change my attitude – again – and get on with enjoying the moment. May as well. There are going to be lots of moments in 12-14 hours of racing on March 7th!
Huge thanks to all my patients and colleagues who are going to let me wear my medal during the whole month of March!
Huge thanks to my patients who are listening intently to every lesson I am learning. It's definitely making me more compassionate as a practitioner.

Mangawhai Zonta Group
Summer fundraising for Zonta
Mangawhai Zonta may have one of the lowest memberships in the country but it is certainly high up on the fundraising stakes.

Some of the takings will be given to the Sophie Elliot Foundation for the purchase of the Love-Me-Not books which are provided on the courses run in schools for teenagers (both boys and girls) to help teach what is good and bad relationship behaviour.
The club will also be making its annual Yellow Rose Award to two Waipu women who have made a significant contribution to the Waipu Community as part of the International Women's Day. Club president, Jan Barnett will be presenting the Yellow Rose Award to Jill Mutch and Juanita McGoldrick at The Cove Cafe, Waipu Cove, on Sunday March 8 at 9am. All are welcome to attend. Spanish BBQ in the Vines
Te Whai Bay Wines, 367 King Road, Mangawhai
This year’s event themed Spanish cuisine, Sangria and music by a solo guitarist. The event sold out one week prior.
The event provided lots of business for locals. Leabourns provided transport around Mangawhai and Te Whai Bay’s own transport had a run out to Langs Beach and Waipu Cove. On their arrival, 80 people enjoyed both white and red Sangria, made of course from Te Whai Bay’s Merlot and Riesling wines.
Local olive oils from Echo Valley and Olives on the Hill were served with breads from the Heads Bakery and enjoyed to the overture from classical and Spanish guitarist, Ricky De Medeiros.
Te Whai Bay will hold a similar event next year. You’ll need to get your tickets early though, this looks like another great Mangawhai event to add to the calendar.
