Bugger
Personalised Plates Ltd, NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) and Surf Life Saving New Zealand are pleased to jointly announce the intention to auction the Rights To Receive the personalised plate BUGGER to the highest bidder, with the winning bid amount being donated to Surf Life Saving New Zealand.

The auction for BUGGER will take place on Trade Me from 7am on 12th May 2015, concluding at 9am on 14th May 2015. Full details of the upcoming auction are on the Personalised Plates website www.plates.co.nz.

End of Season
Easter officially marked the end to the patrol season, but with the good weather and long weekends plenty of people are still hitting the beach.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand is urging Kiwis to be cautious when swimming at an unpatrolled beach and constantly working towards lowering New Zealand's drowning rate. With patrols now ended, we ask that people take responsibility for their own safety when around the water.

Volunteer weekend patrols begin again at Labour Weekend in October.

True to the edict that history repeats, the historic Mangawhai Tavern is now under new ownership. Two of the new owners, Rick Smith who has a history with the Tavern and cousin Angela Ferrier, along with new manager Fred Bayer, are hopeful of returning the tavern to something like its former position and re-establish the tavern as a great place to dine, enjoy a wine or beer, and listen to music. All are hugely excited about the venture and extend a warm welcome to everyone.

War comes to Mangawhai
On May 16 the Mangawhai Museum will host a special display entitled “War Comes to Mangawhai” which will include additional material, a scale model of the Niagra, Mangawhai Home Guard stories, along with a 250kg German mine on loan from the Devonport Naval Museum. It will be well worth visiting  showing various aspects of how our district was touched and affected by WWII. The diplay will be available for viewing through to October.

Honorary life membership
Mangawhai Museum & Historical Society chairman Christine Bygrave has been awarded honorary life membership at the recent AGM. Christine has led the society for several years through the construction of the museum and is currently chairman of the board. To date, the museum cost is $1.7 million, but has been valued at $2.9 million for insurance, which shows just how much volunteer input goes into the operation.

Book Fair
One of the most popular annual fundraising events at the museum, the infamous Book Fair, needs a new location. Over the Easter weekend $11,000 was raised, a rewarding sum for the many volunteers who put in long hours sorting books. Now that the museum is operating, a new venue needs to be found as using three small marquees proved somewhat difficult! Organiser Graeme Smith says the team is working on a solution for next year, and he would like to sincerely thank all those who assisted this time by erecting and taking down the tents, and those who have spent the best part of a year preparing books for the event.

fishing club may-164

Mangawhai Boat and Fishing Club

Glorious weather over the Easter break made the 11th Year Annual Timberworld Fishing Comp an extremely successful fishing competition. An increased number of boat owners keen to get out on the water, highlighted the need for planned extensions to the boat ramp and pontoon.

The current 50-metre L-shaped pontoon was installed by the club some six years ago, and will now be extended a further six metres into deeper water. The new boat ramp will be built on the north side of the pontoon, restricted to launching boats, while incoming boats will be retrieved from the existing ramp on the south side of the pontoon. All good news for boaties. Just don't mention the parking issues!

Work started after Easter and should be completed by June.

The Mangawhai Activity Zone on Molesworth Drive (the "Skate Park") is a brilliant initiative underway in Mangawhai. It includes an international standard skate park, bike and walking tracks, netball courts, and an outside amphitheatre for concerts.

Casino Royale Dinner and Auction
June 20th
Mangawhai

The 2015 Casino Royale Dinner and Auction is being held on June 20th in Mangawhai. This will be an annual upmarket dinner for 200 people with auctions and casino type games. We have Leigh Hart as our MC this year and we’re aiming to raise $20k to move ahead with the next stage of The Zone.  Specifically, with this event we are looking to raise funds to develop the family picnic and BBQ area.

We would be grateful if you would consider supporting this venture with a donation for the auction.   It is a great way for local businesses to support a great community activity like MAZ.  We have already had great support and it is so good to see the community coming together on this project.  If there is anything you think your business could donate for the auction, please don't hesitate to drop me a line.

We are also offering sponsorship packages with branding/advertising opportunities ranging in price $200 - 1500. If you are interested to learn more about these, obviously let me know.
