‘A little out of the way: A lot out of the ordinary’

Newsletter October 2013

Labour weekend in Mangawhai is not to be missed.

This little community really rolls it out in October and brings on the first events of the summer with Agriculture Day at the Beach School. We have The Feelers at The Tavern, the Saturday Country market and also the Sunday Domain market. But first, let us introduce you to something you may not know about Mangawhai.

King Road, the Tuscany of Northland, is home to four (yes four!) vineyards and wineries. Sitting alongside those healthy benefits of wine (in moderation of course) are a number of olive oil producers including Echo Valley Olive Oils, Divinity, Lola’s. Your arteries will sing with delight!

King Road is also the location of Figgin’ Delicious, fruit growers and various art and craft venues, including sculpture and artist couple, the Hockenhulls. This road is destined to become a feature of Mangawhai.

The vines are growing and the wine makers are busy. The harvest of 2013 is reaching a crescendo in wine making world. Bottling of the white wines and rosé happens in October. The red wines are further developed to accentuate their flavours and depth. This Labour weekend will find you sampling both 2012 and 2013 grapes. Each year well-made wine improves in the bottle so you will be offered wines from previous years too. These are great wines and any wine connoisseur will be in seventh heaven. This less righteous are guaranteed an experience of wine tasting unsurpassed in such a small area.
te-whai(copy)Newcomer to King Road is Te Whai Bay Wines. This new business has just won the 2013 Northland Region of the ANZ Flying Start Awards. There are big plans for this venue and they already have a series of wines to offer including an aged Bordeaux blend, Chardonnay both oaked and un-oaked, Riesling, Merlot and Rosé. Wine makers for Te Whai Bay are Rod MacIvor of Marsden Winery and Lee Winston of Pleasant Valley Winery.

locheilCongratulations to Lochiel Estate Vineyard and Winery for their Gold Medal win at the International Wine Show for their 2012 Chardonnay. This is great wine which makes you realise the breadth of flavours a Chardonnay can have.  Lochiel also have a range of wines to offer. The wine maker Rob is an award winner himself and son to owners Liz and Gary Cameron. Lochiel Estate also provides bed and breakfast in a beautiful vineyard and winery setting.
millars(copy)Millars Vineyard is 2 hectares in vines comprising of Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Viognier and Syrah. Small is beautiful and Millars produce wines that are not only memorable but also of premium quality that reflect the care and attention shown, both in the vineyard and in the winery. The winemaker is Rob Cameron and Millars wine is a consistent medal winner both regionally, nationally and internationally.

Mangawhai Walking Weekend         27th – 30th March 2014

The 15th annual event is almost organised so we are looking forward to another weekend of fun and activity involving many members of our special community. Perhaps those reading this may have ideas to contribute to the programme. We are open to fundraising requests or maybe any advertising that could accompany the two mail-outs that we send. The Kindergarten is not joining us this year so there is a vacancy for a fundraising walk of your making.

If we can cooperate with any businesses that may like to play a more active part over the Walking Weekend we are open to any suggestions. It would be great to hear from you.
