Sun 28 Sep 2014, 10:00am–5:00pm

Welcome in an Arty Spring!
Mangawhai comes alive as artists open their studios and galleries to  the public. The Mangawhai Art Trail features something for everyone  including: painting (oils, acrylics and pastels), heirloom hand - crafted furniture, jewellery, one-off funky clothing, corrugated iron art, photography, pottery, printmaking, wood carving, sculpture (wood,  soft stone, ceramics) and outdoor art. Held over two days The Mangawhai Art Trail coincides this season with the changeover to Daylight Saving. A group exhibition will be hosted at Mangawhai's  New Museum on Molesworth Drive.
As part of the Art Trail weekend and to celebrate the decision by  Mangawhai Artists Inc to set up an Art Centre in Mangawhai Community  Park there will be two fundraising events:

  • Art Tree: This will be  set up adjacent to the new Museum where for a gold coin donation you  can attach a coloured disk (and a message of goodwill) to the tree  which will remain on site as a public art piece and an expression of  good fortune to the Artists of Mangawhai.
  • Art Puzzle: This will be  run over the weekend which will entail entrants (with a gold coin  donation) from the public answering a series of questions related to an object of art displayed at some of the venues. An original piece of  art has been donated as the winner's prize.

Entry to each venue is free. Studios and galleries are marked with ART signs and colourful flags. Maps will be available from the new Museum,  Sail Rock Café, Mangawhai Information Centre. Please note: photos shown are indicative only of the artworks on  offer.

bennetts"I make no secret of my love of local ingredients and flavours so you won’t be surprised at my newest venture to capture the taste of Mangawhai. Not so long ago on a cool, grey morning I collected a bucket of water from the beach and began the process of making our own salt. It might sound a bit crazy but it worked!  We heated the sea water slowly and waited for the crystals to form. What we ended up with was a tray of perfect large, flaky sea-salt crystals or if we want to get a bit posh, a tray of Mangawhai Fleur de Sel. David has trialed our Fleur de Sel in our salted caramel chocolate and the local, fresh sea-salt makes this chocolate hum."   Mary Bennett

MHVLS CommiteeHeld it's annual AGM in the newly renovated Surf Club. Club members recognised the service and contribution of a number of past and present members in a Special Awards Ceremony.
Marie Flavell (Club Patron) was recognised for her ongoing service to MVHLS and was gifted an Honourary Life Membership to the Club. Flavell has been the cornerstone of the Club's culture for over two decades, with the 3rd generation of her family coming through the Junior Surf and Lifeguard ranks at the club.  She was also awarded a 50 year badge for 50 years involvement in Surf Life Saving in New Zealand.
Also recognised at the awards ceremony was the contribution of 4 out of the 5 "Original" members of the Club, Rob Haworth(Hub) Dave Chisholm (haggis) Warrick Orr (wack) Jim Chisholm Honorary Life Memberships to MHVLS. As Gordon Finlayson explains "These are the original Lifeguards that made up the first patrol at Mangawhai. They got the clubs first reel from Waipu on loan untill they were able to buy one for Mangawhai. They had a tin shack where the end of the car park and used this to store the reel and flags for patrol. Rob and Dave were the builders of the surf club in 1966 . The site that the surf club is on was acually dug out of the mountain the front of the club ws built up by rock procured from the farmers at the Tara area of Mangawhai. These four are still involved with helping out and organising the Nothern region Black Belf Golf competition .Stuart Murray came along in 1965 and was instrumental in getting funds to build the clubhouse and patrolling. Without his effort we would not have been able to finish the building .Stuart is now living in Perth"
A new Committee was appointed for the coming 2014/2015 SLS season at Mangawhai Heads. Daniel Russek was elected as Club President after a season as Club Chairman. Tony Baker has taken over the role of Club Chairman after nearly 10 years on the MHVLS Committee in various roles. Harris has taken over the role of Club Captain.
Other key roles for the coming season include Shay Waldron (Junior Surf Coordinator) , Jess Costello (Clubhouse Director) , Murray Dix (Powercraft Coordinator) Daniel Hassal (Junior Club Captain).
The club is looking forward to another excellent and safe season at Mangawhai Heads and we look forward to seeing you all at the beach soon.
