Best moon phase in brief by Richard Guyton

October begins with a small window of opportunity for sowing the seeds of root crops such as carrots and parsnips, but only on the 2nd and 3rd, after which a "barren period" of five days puts pay to any plans for further sowing. The 9th and 10th provide another brief chance to put down a second root crop sowing, before the new moon arrives with her rising vitality and requirement to get garden jobs that don't involve seeds or seedlings, done.

You can cultivate at this time, weed with confidence and feed your already-growing plants with the liquid feeds of your choice. Side dressings of home-made compost are greatly appreciated by plants over this period. The morning of the 17th day of October heralds the start of the best phase of the moon, according to active and enthusiastic gardeners – the First Quarter period that provides opportunity for all of the planting a gardener could wish for. That phase lasts 9 days and should exhaust the fittest gardener, if used to the fullest.

restoration aug-603Heads Dunes Planting an Outstanding Success.

Gordon Hosking (community), Adrian Birkbeck (KDC), and Laura Shaft NRC), would like to extend a big vote of appreciation to all those folk who made the Stage 1 Heads dune restoration planting such an outstanding success.

Over 1200 plants went in the ground and with a good turnout it only took a couple of hours. The area is taped off to prevent disturbance and the team would appreciate being advised if repairs need to be made to this at any time in the future.

All those folk who have provided email contact will hear from us when Stage 2 gets underway next winter. Dune restoration is critical to maintaining the integrity of this fragile system, especially with the likely increased frequency of storm events, and your support and effort on the ground is greatly appreciated.

Rayders Cycle Club

The Mangawhai Rayders is a newly formed cycle club. We are currently catering for the road cyclist in Mangawhai and as the club grows we hope to support, encourage and develop the different disciplines of cycling.
The club is run by locals, and encourage all levels to come and join us for a ride or training session. With a wealth of knowledge and experience the club can support the beginner rider and challenge the experienced rider.

We are now ready for Junior membership and with this membership is the formalising of mountainbike Mondays and Holiday program / away rides to Woodhill and other neat trails.
It also gives some support to the Bike Bus and myself as a Coach. By joining the riders up to a club it gives me as a coach a disclaimer for any activities you or your children are involved in, insurance for the forests we use and more importantly it gives us formal numbers to apply to funding agencies for resources and also to encourage our local council to supply safe cycleways around our town.

The $25 fee to join goes directly to Bike Northland for our insurance.
Mountainbike Mondays will continue to be $5 for members and $10 for non members.
Holiday rides $10 for members and $20 for non members.
Away rides free for members and $10 for non members.
Bike bus free for members and will only be available for club members with 20" wheels or bigger.

maz aug-119MAZ - Mangawhai Activity Zone

The Casino Royale night was an outstanding success! Almost $42,000 was raised on the night. Funds are to be spent on a BBQ area in the park close to the carpark and children’s playground area, and the goal is to have BBQ’s installed and operating by Christmas.

A huge THANK YOU to all those who organised the night, to everyone who gave of their time voluntarily on the night to make it happen, to sponsors for donating amazing auction items and to the local community for turning up and supporting this wonderful cause.

To the five families who made this happen MAZ and Mangawhai thank you very much. To:

Honor & Craig Stratton-Parker
Dayna & Bryce Beauchamp
Pit & Kevin Stirrat
Jo & Ricardo Lee
Natasha & John Lee
A very special big thank you to Vanessa Kerridge of Flaxmere House, Vanessa and her team generously volunteered their time to make the night amazing.

mypad-848MyPad Auction – Mangawhai Heads
MAZ has begun construction of a “MyPad” in Mangawhai. This is a project undertaken for MAZ by Colin and Jenny Gallagher to raise funds for our park.
The house will be located on the corner of Devon and Moir Point Road.

Funds raised through this project will be used at MAZ to build an extensive wooden fort in the children’s playground area, a warm up / cool down exercise area at the entrance to the walking tracks, and commencement of stage III of the skate park “free flow” bowl.

There will be open home days during January 2015 when the house is complete. The auction date is yet to be announced.

Go over to MyPad.net.nz to check out designs.

Become an official SMAZ
The call is out from Mangawhai Activity Zone, that wonderful park on Molesworth Drive. Noticed how many people were using all the facilities over the school holidays? Just brilliant. MAZ trustees wish now to build a team of community minded volunteers to help maintain and develop our Mangawhai Activity Zone (MAZ). If you could give one hour, or even one day per month, they would love to hear from you. Call Colin for details 021 955 850 or 09 431 4598. If you love Mangawhai, do something like joining SMAZ – Supporters of MAZ. Come along to meet the committee this Sunday, 26 July, 11am, at the MAZ carpark, to get an idea of the sort of volunteer work required – mowing, weeding, lost property, signage, maintenance, safety aspects and suchlike.
