We have just had a magical week at Mangawhai. I grew up here years ago and we still visit regularly as my Mum is resting at 'Tara" but was totally wonderful to be a tourist for a week. We totally had a ball. It was a total delight. We hope the fairy terns get the respect it deserves from locals and visitors...we need to do all we can to protect these precious creatures...they are so fragile and we need to ensure they are here for many more generations. It was so magic to fossick, do the cliff walk, kayak and swim in such a beautiful environment. Thankyou so much x

zlo@slingshot sounds like a bitter parent that voted against the introduction of the uniform. Contrary to her statement, the school does not make a huge profit on the sale of uniforms, that’s what the fundraising is for.
I love the uniform-saves the indecisions in the morning about what to wear and a whole weeks worth of washing!

Anybody seen my pink flamingo?
Not your regular flamingo but 1.6 metres tall "Pink Trash" made of steel and fibreglass planted securely under the palm tree at 65 Lincoln Street. It was rather heavy and needed 2 people and a vehicle to move it when it disappeared during the school holidays.
The artist is Hannah Kidd and it was purchased from NZ Sculpture Onshore 2004 in support of the women's refuges. If you find it please return or advise the Mangawhai Police. I would love it back, thanks.

As the landfill was taken over by Mason's - and being houseproud renovators and gardeners - but not full-time locals - Is there now such a thing as an inorganic refuse collection in Mangawhai ? Hi Rebecca - Thanks for the feedback. An exciting new development for Mangawhai is the proposed new museum on Molesworth Drive. Plans have been finalised and The Historical Society is busy fundraising for the distinctive stingray-inspired roof topped building. The stingray, as you may be aware, is of significance as it is believed that Mangawhai means "the place of the stingray". Stingray used to come into the harbour to breed. The Historical Society will also be establishing their own website in the New Year, which will be linked to from this site. In the meantime, it is planned to include a brief history so watch this space! At the moment I have been out and about taking photos of all the summer action - beach days at the Surf Club, the annual summer carnival and of course, our stunning scenery. If you would like some information on our history then email the Society's President, John Bull at bull.john@xtra.co.nz.

Hello,
I spent 4 years of my childhood in Mangawhai living there and attending the school. I know that my distant relatives the "Wharfes" founded Mangawhai along with the "Wintles"
I think it would great if you guys added a brief history of Mangawhai to your site. Historic sites and events and such. When tourists visit they like to know these sorts of things. Also I would like to know too as I have very little information on how these people actually Pioneered the town. Thank you very much for your time,

Alison, just a note to advise people visiting the area, either for the weekend or passing by we are operating a Wireless Hotspot from the Nurv (behind the bakery) for anyone with Internet needs, also computers available too. The wireless is Prepay from as little as 15 minutes up to 7 days for only $30 if you are staying awhile. 24/7 and creditcard / paypal access too if we are shut. I am currently embarking on making Mangawhai a Hotspot zone, where anyone can visit most cafes, accommodations, have a round of golf and have a pass for any for their internet needs. thanks clayton. Hi Alfred. Wow, that is a loaded question! I would advise you to consult with some of our local real estate agents and your financial adviser/bank manager regarding the financial benefits or otherwise. Certainly many bach/holiday home owners do rent out their properties over the summer months to offset the mortgage. A quick check on the internet shows over 125 such properties are currently advertising visitor accommodation here in Mangawhai. There is also the question of compliance with industry regulations eg resource consent, public liability and house insurance. Hope this helps - Alison

Hi Natalie
It's always great to hear from someone who has such great memories of our beautiful part of Northland. Mangawhai is popular for weddings, and I can supply you with a A-Z list of wedding suppliers including venues. There are licensed cafes/restaurants and clubs including the surf club, the bowling club and the revamped Domain Hall in which to hold the reception; private caterers at your own venue are also an option. Milestone Cottages (see "Places to Stay" in our website)specialises in weddings and is a stunning location providing both venue and accommodation by the sea. There is a professional wedding photographer living locally (you can view his photo gallery online) and full hire facilities for equipment. If you wish me to email you this directory please send your email address to info@mangawhai.co.nz along with any other queries you may have. Regards, Alison

Hi Alison, I grew up loving Mangawhai but unfortunately my parents sold the batch when I was sixteen. Years later I am now living in Perth Aus with my boyfriend and we are getting married late 2007 or early 2008. The thought of having a wedding in Mangawhai feels so right. However on searching the websites I was unable to get much information on where to or how to hold a wedding there. I would love to get married by/on the beach and maybe even have the reception at the surf club. But not sure if this is possible. Can you help me to get in contact with the right people. I would love to see photos of people married in Mangawhai. Thank you for your time

Hi Brooke. The variable oyster catcher breeds largely on sandy beaches or sand spits, particularly near estuaries, but also on shell banks, rocky shorelines and gravel areas. Occasionally will nest on grassed areas (including paddocks or golf courses behind beaches). For more information Google "variable oyster catcher habitat" in New Zealand pages; or go to The Department of Conservation's website.

If you care to email me at info@mangawhai.co.nz I will send you information on the various walks available. Focus Mangawhai, our local tourism and business promotions group, is looking at putting together a brochure of walks in this part of the Kaipara. There is also the annual Mangawhai Walking Weekend, a series of interesting guided walks of various degrees of difficulty. These take place in either March or April of each year. I would visit Mangawhai more often, but didn't know there were any bushwalks near there. However, the website says: "Experience the real magic of Mangawhai on the many coastal and bush walks."
Where can I find a map or other details of where all these bush and coastal walks are? I only know the Mangawhai Heads beach and cliff walk.
Please help me explore your beautiful area more thoroughly!
PS...are there any walking or tramping groups???
Many thanks

Hello Emma
I'm sure you and your family will have a wonderful time in Magical Mangawhai, even in June. Of course, weather will be a factor but that will be the same for any seaside town. Even in winter there are many options for ocean and bush walks, with or without the shell collecting. The local fish and tackle shop could supply lines for a little sprat fishing! Kayaks are available for hire in the safer inner harbour environs. We have mini golf, children's playgrounds and tennis courts, golf too if they aspire to be Tiger Woods! Mangawhai is handily placed to serve as a base for day time trips around the region. (Whangarei is 50 minutes by car, and the Bay of Islands is only a 2 hour drive away, plus there are attractions all around the Kaipara.) On this website we have an events calendar. Use this to keep posted on events around June. If you and your husband would like to take a day trip without the children you could use the services of a local day care/early childhood education centre. There are two shopping centres, The Heads and the Village, each with a full range of service and specialty shops, restaurants and cafes. I would be happy to supply any more information if you should require it. Best wishes for a happy family reunion.

Hi there, we are coming to NZ for a family gathering in Auckland. We have three young children (4 & under). we will be spending the weekend in Auckland but have been offered use of a house in Mangawhai for a week after that. The downside is it is in mid June. Can you pls tell me if there is much to do in winter and also if there are many child friendly activities to do. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Jane. Focus Mangawhai (local tourism promotions group & operators of this website) distributes brochures containing street maps of Mangawhai, and lists accommodation providers in the area. An updated brochure should be available about Aug/Sep 06. Click to our on-line printable map within our site (Holiday Planner/Map)which uses symbols and mouse-over text to show location and information about the various accommodation and cafes etc on offer. We can also provide a list of wedding suppliers/venues/JPS etc. If you would like any more information please email me at info@mangawhai.co.nz with your postal address. Best wishes for your wedding in Magical Mangawhai.

Hello Marilyn. Thank you for your feedback. Where applicable, email addresses are included. I can only assume that there are still a lot of businesses failing to take advantage of the internet as a marketing tool. Perhaps this message will give them a hurry-up!

Mangawhai
Hi Wendy of UK. Mangawhai is an excellent place both to live and to visit. The lifestyle is relaxed and the locals very friendly and hospitable. It is a 90 minute drive from Auckland CBD, on the east coast. Mangawhai has a wildlife bird refuge on its unique harbour sand dunes which are accessible by boat, and also by foot at low tide. These dunes are home to some of New Zealand's rare birds: Variable Oystercatcher, NZ Dotterel, Caspian Tern, Fairy Tern, as well as many other birds. For more information on the refuge, go to the Holiday Planner and click on the yellow star symbol to the top right of the words Mangawhai Heads. By mousing over the symbol you will see the words DOC Wildlife/Bird Sanctuary. Click once for more information on the refuge. If the beach is not your thing, perhaps the local cafes, art galleries and specialty shops are. Mangawhai is also a perfect base from which to explore other areas eg the Waipu wildlife refuge (a 15 min drive), and the environs of the Kaipara Harbour on the west coast, less than an hour's drive away. If you require any more information please email me at info@mangawhai.co.nz.

Hello
Can anyone help? We have been offered a bach as part of a home exchange deal. Would this be an interesting area to come to. We are in our late fifties and my husband is an arachnaphobic! We are not really beach people but love to watch wildlife, especially birds.

On a recent trip to Auckland we decided that we would love to settle in Mangawhai but I am confused about thebest areas. We have been told that a new development and land has become available in an area called The Sands by North Coast developers. I have looked for over a week now and cannot find a map showing streets and areas to confirm wherethis land is in relation to the beach, shops, call course.
If any one can help this would be very much appreciated

As a former Mangawhai girl currently living in Dublin, Ireland - I have to say - great site for browsing when homesick at work! BUT ... more photos!!! especially of the beaches please - Picnic Bay, pohutakawas in flower, the surf club ... make sure there is sparkling sand and loads of sunshine in all of them please ... that is the selling point for Mangawhai!!!

Site has great potential but VERY surprised that the EVENTS CALENDAR (as at 11Feb) does not mention one of the biggest events Mangawhai will see in 2005 ie Auckland Surf Lifesaving Champs and the Lifeguard Longboard Nationals held 12/13 Feb and 26 Feb respectively. Surfs up guys ...lets tell the world.
